Jump Up With Caribana!
Caribana is the largest Caribbean festival in North America and occurs for two weeks every July/August in Toronto.
Caribana was first held in 1967 to coincide with Canada’s 100th birthday as a tribute based on Trinidad’s Carnival. Although it lasts for three weeks, Caribana is probably most well known for the big parade (Parade of Bands) which features thousands of participants dressed in very elaborate costumes with soca, steel drum, calypso, salsa and reggae music playing all day provided by live bands who also take part in the parade. This is easy to find as it takes place along Lakeshore Boulevard moving west and is free to attend. During the three week event, you’ll also experience the Junior Carnival for the kids, Arts and Culture Festival, King of the Bands and Queen of the Bands competitions and the big event, the Parade of Bands. Living on the lakeshore as I do, I can hear the music from across the lake on Olympic Island and can also hear and see part of the parade from my condo! It’s quite an event and it brings in close to 1 million visitors yearly. To learn more about Caribana, visit their website at Caribana.com
