Arriving At Toronto Airport

Here are some tips for arriving at Toronto Airport.

Pearson International Airport (Airport Code: YYZ) is the official name of the airport in Toronto.

The airport is named after former Canadian Prime Minister and Nobel Peace Prize winner Lester B. Pearson.

The Toronto airport has undergone a great deal of work over the past few years and two of the biggest additions are:

Terminal Growth And Upgrades: Toronto’s airport has three terminals cleverly named Terminal 1, 2 and 3! Terminal 1 is the newest terminal and opened in April 2004 and replaced the old Terminal 1 which was demolished to make room for the new one. Air Canada is the major tenant of Terminal 1.

Interterminal Shuttle: In July 2006, a new airport train shuttle opened that links Terminals 1 and 3 and the Reduced Rate Parking Lot. The link is free of charge and operates 24/7. A shuttle bus continues to operate between each terminal as well.

Terminal 1: Handles domestic and international flights. New Terminal 1 opened in 2004.

Terminal 2: Handles flights to and from the US. Opened in 1972.

Terminal 3: Was built as an expansion to handle increased traffic to the airport. Many major world airlines operate out of Terminal 3. Opened in 1991.

Location of Toronto Airport

Pearson International Airport is located around 30km west of downtown Toronto and is actually located in the town of Malton. At the north side of the airport is an old McDonnell Douglas plant (that later became part of Boeing) with a very long history of aircraft manufacturing. Although it is no longer in use, the plant has produced (among other things) the Lancaster bomber and Avro Jetliner as well as wings for the DC-9 and finally the Boeing 717 during the plant’s long history. What a great part of Toronto (and Canadian) aviation history!

Getting To And From the Airport

While you can catch a regular taxi cab to go to the airport, only authorized airport limos can transport passengers from the airport. There are also shuttle buses that transport passengers between the airport and downtown Toronto.

In my experience, it normally costs around $50 CDN to travel between the airport and downtown Toronto.

Tip: Flat taxi rates are available between the airport and downtown area and are based on geographic zones. In some instances, I’ve found that it’s a few dollars cheaper to pay a metered rate than the approved flat rate! Having said that, I live next to the boundary line that determines the pricing so in other cases, you might be better off with the flat rate.

Toronto’s airport is operated by the Greater Toronto Airport Authority (GTAA) and you can visit their website for more complete airport information: Greater Toronto Airport Authority Website
