The Toronto Waterfront
Revitalization Project

The Toronto waterfront has been a popular topic of debate for many years. Specifically what to do with the waterfront area has been the topic that tends to get discussed.

There have been some nice improvements to the waterfront – small ones anyways – over the past few years but a bigger plan to improve the waterfront has been a long time in coming.

In 2005, a boardwalk was added to the Harbourfront Centre area moving east where many of the local boat tours originate from.

The 5-metre wide boardwalk has helped to add more walking space and enables people to walk closer to the shore of Lake Ontario.

Also, several other areas along Queen’s Quay have been designated as green spaces and work has been done to turn a former parking lot into a beach area that people can access.

Here is what the space looked like during the summer of 2006 when it was still being built.

Again, the bigger question was what to do with the waterfront on a bigger scale and in June 2006, these plans were finally announced.

Among other things the revitalization project will complete the Martin Goodman Trail used by cyclists and rollerbladers which is currently disjointed given that it passes right through the downtown core along busy Queen’s Quay.

Also, the revitalization project also includes the addition of an 18 metre promenade including a wooden boardwalk, floating piers and a series of bridges that will extend public accessibility in the area.

Currently, this area is somewhat underutilized and as a local resident, I’m looking forward to seeing the final result.
